Creating Space to Score!! Chase’s Blog — How to Shoot a Basketball –

Have you ever wondered how to create space so that you can shoot over or slip past the defense? www.shotscience.com This week Chase discusses how you can create space, which will allow you to get your shot off or, to drive to the hoop. It may seem counterintuitive, but you can do this by closing the space between you and the defender. This sets off a chain-reaction that develops into a “mini close-out” situation; deadly to the unsuspecting defender!! We look forward to all of your comments! Thanks so much for all the support! We’d love to get a video response from one of you! See you next week!! Be sure to check out our website www.shotscience.com and Chase’s site www.shotscience.com -Tom

temjin: You know, We took a look and your are correct. Sometimes we have these litlle “glitcshes” when we are videoing and they get by us. Creating the space is a really solid move. Are you using it or plan to? Let us know.

siisd: It sounds like you are doing the right thing in giving the ball if you don’t have a solid shot. Sometimes we force shots that are not there hoping for the foul. Sometimes we get nothing. We like to have our student make solid jump stops when they attack the rack and there’s nor where to go. Reverse turn and pitch it to a team mate for a three. Check out our finishes at the rack video for ways to finish. Let us know how it goes for you.

y’all’s videos are great and really put things in perspective.. thanks for putting em up.
I do have something to ask though.. I think that making the extra pass is the difference between an easy shot or a stupid shot.. but most of my team gets mad when I pass.. for example, off a drive if the defense collapses I often dish it to the open man for a jumpshot or their own drive.. they say I should just go for the shot and draw a foul.. can you help me make a better decision?

imak: This kind of depends on whether you have established a pivot foot. If you have there is not choice. If no pivot has been determined go with your dominant foot. If you are right handed your dominant hand would be your right.

when the defense is coming toward you and you decide to drive to the basket past them on the left side do you step with your left foot forward to kinda seal them out or step with the right foot and try to use more speed? Thanks alot. :)

chris: The problem your are experiencing is from a lack confidence. It’s really tough when we wander if the shot will be blocked, miss the target or we loose it. If we worry about all the negative things we allow the negatives to rule! Be very positive when you shoot the ball. It’s in and good when we shoot and not a sure miss. If you have watched my son Chase in his highlights you need to know that he never considered that he might miss the shot! Be positive!!

hey man, great vid! i go to a small Christian school and i get to play point guard. i pretty quick off the dribble, but i am a terrible shooter if a defender even puts a hand up 3 feet away. any pointers o getting rid of that “shot anxiaty”?
